What is Shingle Rejuvenation? How it Could Save Your Roof

Entirely replacing a roof requires a major investment from the property owner, and should be considered only as a last resort. As a roofing company in Victoria, we share this sentiment. We believe in helping homeowners add years to the lives of their roof. But how?

The answer is shingle rejuvenation – also known as roof rejuvenation. The process involves applying a special treatment to the roof shingles, which has the ability to add years to roof’s lifespan. One shingle rejuvenation could save you from a roof replacement for 15 years.

In this article, we explore the process of shingle rejuvenation while detailing just how it could save the bacon of property owners for years to come.

What is Shingle Rejuvenation?

Shingle rejuvenation is a relatively simple sealant application process which provides a roof with a range of protections against the elements, ultimately extending its life by years. The sealant is applied directly to the individual roof shingles. There’s no need for any kind of destruction, repair or replacement. That means a shingle rejuvenation is a quick and cost-effective option for property owners.

There are a number of coatings and paints you can apply to a roof for protection. None can provide the same level of defense and longevity as our special shingle rejuvenation process.

How Does it Work?

Asphalt shingles contain oil. This oil generates an adhesive, so the shingles stick together, while also keeping them physically flexible. Shingle rejuvenation targets the oils and materials that make up the shingle.

Millions of nano particles are activated, which have the ability to transform the molecular makeup of the shingles. The treatment application replenishes those oils within the shingles, which not only helps them become resistant to the elements, but improves their physical strength for years to come.

The application process for a shingle rejuvenation is pretty simple. In a matter of hours, our team can apply the sealant directly to your roof. There’s no need for any construction, destruction, or other mayhem. We simply get up on your roof and give it a thorough spray – then you’re good to go.

How Shingle Rejuvenation Adds Years to Roof Life

The oil embedded in each shingle diminishes over time. This happens as part of their normal aging process, which can be hastened by UV damage from the sun or intense periods of rain or snow.

Once the oils are depleted, the roof itself is left vulnerable to granule loss, cracking, and damage. As the last line of defense against the elements, damaged shingles open the door for roof leaks and related nightmares coming true.

Here’s how a shingle rejuvenation can protect against the elements and provide real protection and longevity:

  • Ice and snow. The extreme temperatures that come with ice and snow have the power to crack and damage shingles. Roof rejuvenation gives your roof the ability to withstand the expansion and contraction that comes with freezing and thawing.
  • UV damage. Over time, the sun will turn shingles brittle while depleting their granules and making them weaker. Shingle rejuvenation restores oil and resin levels, along with boosting the shingles’ granule adhesion and overall flexibility.
  • Wind. Wind is an issue because it can lift shingles and invite in water. But a well oiled and rejuvenated shingle will not flap, crack or lift, nullifying the risk of high winds.
  • Water damage and leaks. Shingle rejuvenation restores the waterproofing barrier of the roof. Leaks are also avoided when shingles are strong and healthy, as they’ll no longer flap around, crack or incur damage.
  • Visual appearance. As time goes on, the colour of roof shingles tends to fade and discolour. Replenishing the oils enhances the original colour of the shingles while making them appear darker.
  • Algae prevention. Algae prefer roofs that are susceptible to moisture and leaks. With a fresh shingle rejuvenation, algae won’t stand a chance to grow and spread.

How Much Life Can a Roof Gain?

After all is said and done, a shingle rejuvenation stands to extend the lifespan of any roof. But how much extra life can you expect? The answer to this question is determined by the current age of a roof.

The best possible outcome from a shingle rejuvenation can be felt by roofs that are 7 years old or younger. This is when the benefits and protections are strongest. Younger roofs are simply more inviting to the millions of nano particles that penetrate the shingles to do their job. If your roof is young, you could easily add 10 to 15+ years of life.

If your roof is in the 7- to 15-year-old range, it’s not quite too old but starting to age. In this range, you’ll still feel the majority of benefits of a shingle rejuvenation. In this case, expect 5 to 10 years of additional life.

If your roof is older than 15 years old, you won’t see the same benefits. But a shingle rejuvenation could still boost your roof’s life by 3-5 years, buying you significant time to figure out the next step.
